Unveiling the List: Which Devices Will Support iOS and iPadOS 18?

Apple unveiled new versions of its mobile OS for iPhones and iPads this week at WWDC. Here is which devices will support iOS and iPadOS 18.

Apple held its much-anticipated 2024 WWDC keynote, announcing a bevy of new features for the upcoming iOS and iPadOS 18 operating systems for iPhones and iPads. When updates come, owners of older devices get nervous about which devices will support the new OS. Luckily, the list is pretty extensive. However, some features may not work on older hardware.

The good news for users of older devices, except for 2018’s sixth-generation iPad, is that iOS 18 will run on the same hardware that supports iOS 17. iPhones with iOS 18 support will include everything from the second-gen iPhone XR/XS to the newer second-gen iPhone SE.

Still, it’s important to note that while your device may run the new mobile OS, it may or may not support all the latest features, depending on its age.

Will My iPhone Run iOS 18?

Will My iPad Run iPadOS 18?

If you are wondering if your iPad will run the latest version of iPadOS 18, check out the following list:

• iPad Pro (M4)
• iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd-gen or later)
• iPad Pro 11-inch (1st-gen or later)
• iPad Air (M2)
• iPad Air (3rd-gen or later)
• iPad (7th-gen or later)

Which Devices Made the Cut?

It is important to note that while the seventh-generation iPad makes the cutoff, the sixth-generation iPad model doesn’t, considering both use the same Apple A10 processor. However, the seventh-gen iPad has 3GB of RAM instead of 2GB.

Do All Devices Get All Features?

The short answer is no. While your older device may support iOS 18, newer and more powerful devices will have features others don’t.

The most notable is the “Apple Intelligence” AI feature reserved for iPhone 15 Pro (or higher), which has an A17 Pro chip. The regular iPhone 15 will not see the AI features. You will need an iPad Air or Pro with an M1 or newer chip for the iPad.

The Smart Script handwriting enhancement feature requires an iPad with an Apple M-series chip or an A14. That requirement means older A10, A12, and A-13 M-series chips won’t have it.

It’s also important to mention that live audio transcription, the Eye Tracking accessibility feature, and the Vocal Shortcuts accessibility feature will require an iPhone 12 or newer.
