How to Convert WebP to JPG or PNG

If you’re saving an image from a website, you may find it’s in WebP format. Here’s how to convert WebP to JPG or PNG.

WebP is an image format developed by Google that is intended primarily for use with images on the web. The larger the file size of images on a web page, the longer that page will take to load. This may not be hugely noticeable on a fast internet connection, but at slower speeds, it can have a clear impact. WebP uses compression to make files that are smaller than other commonly used image formats. Unfortunately, WebP isn’t as commonly supported as JPG and PNG, so you may need to convert the file to use it on other platforms.

For example, an equivalent lossless WebP image can be 26 percent smaller than a PNG file and up to 34 percent smaller than a JPG. Here’s how to convert WebP to JPG or PNG. While the format obviously has clear benefits, it doesn’t have the same level of support as more popular file types such as JPG and PNG and may not be compatible with the apps or platforms you’re using. If this is the case, you’ll need to convert your WebP images into a different format to be able to use them. Here’s how to do so on both Windows and Mac.

How to Convert WebP to JPG or PNG on Windows using Paint

If you’re using Windows, there is an app that may come preinstalled that you can use to convert WebP files to either JPG or PNG. The good old Paint app will allow you to open a WebP image and save it as a JPG or PNG in just a couple of clicks.

1. Click on the Search field in the taskbar.
   
2. Type Paint.
3. Select the Paint app from the results.
   
4. If you’ve deleted the Paint app at any point, you can reinstall it from the Microsoft Store.
5. Click the File menu in Paint.
   
6. Select Open.
   
7. Navigate to the WebP file that you want to open and click Open.
   
8. Once the image has opened, click the File menu again.
   
9. Select Save As.
   
10. To save the image as a JPG, click JPEG Picture.
    
11. To save the image as a PNG, click PNG Picture.
    
12. Select a location for your file, change the name if you wish, and click Save.
    
13. Your file is now converted to the selected format.

How to Convert WebP to JPG or PNG on Mac using Preview

If you’re on a Mac, you can also use a native app to convert WebP images to PNG or JPG. The Preview app allows you to open a WebP image and export it as a JPG or PNG file.

1. Open the Preview app on your Mac.
2. Click the File menu.
   
3. Select Open.
   
4. Navigate to the WebP file you want to convert, select it, and click Open.
   
5. Once the WebP file has opened in Preview, click the File menu again.
   
6. Select Export.
   
7. To save a JPG, set the Format to JPEG.
8. You can change the Quality using the slider depending on whether you want better quality or a smaller file size.
   
9. To save a PNG, set the Format to PNG.
   
10. Select a location, change the file name if you want to, and click Save.
    
11. Your file is now exported in the appropriate format.

How to Convert WebP to JPG or PNG Using an Online Converter

You can also convert WebP image files to JPG or PNG using online converter websites. These are websites where you can upload your WebP image, and the site will convert it to a PNG or JPG for you. You can then download the converted image from the website. Sites of this kind are usually free to use, and there are plenty of them out there. In this example, we’ll use the AnyWebP website, which allows you to convert multiple WebP files to PNG or JPG at once.

1. Navigate to anywebp.com in your browser.
2. Click Select Images and choose the images you want to convert.
   
3. Alternatively, drag the WebP images from File Explorer or Finder onto the AnyWebP page.
4. To convert your files to JPG, select jpeg as the Output in the left-hand menu.
   
5. To convert your files to PNG, select png as the Output in the left-hand menu.
   
6. You can change the Size and Quality settings if you wish.
7. Click Convert All Images at the bottom of the screen.
   
8. Your converted files will be exported as a .zip file in the format that you selected.

Other Ways to Make the Conversion

There are a few other ways that you can convert a WebP image to a JPG or PNG. You can take a screenshot on Windows or on your Mac to capture the image that you want to convert. This may save the image in lower resolution than the original, however. There are also apps that you can download that allow you to convert from one image format to another, such as WebP Converter or XnConvert. There are also some browser extensions that you can use, such as Image Formatter or Save Image as Type. If you regularly need to convert WebP files to PNG or JPG, you might want to consider one of these options.

Converting WebP Images to Other Formats

WebP images are ideal for the web as they offer superior compression that allows you to use images on web pages with smaller file sizes than formats such as JPG or PNG. However, the format is still not as widely supported as the more popular JPG and PNG formats and may not work on some platforms. In these cases, you’ll need to convert the images to a different format such as JPG or PNG if you want to use them. The methods above will allow you to quickly convert your WebP images to a different format that will be compatible with a wider range of apps and platforms. There are plenty of different ways to convert a WebP file to a JPG or PNG, so the best advice is to try a few methods out and find the one that works best for your particular situation.
