How to Cancel and Refund a Copilot Pro Subscription

A Copilot Pro subscription unlocks some added extras to the new built-in AI, but if you don’t need it, you can cancel your subscription using this guide.

If you’re running an up-to-date Windows 11 PC, you’ll have already spotted one addition to the taskbar — Copilot. Copilot (or Bing Chat as it was once known) is the built-in Windows AI tool. Microsoft has gone big on AI, so it makes sense that it’s trying to ram it onto every PC it can.

While you can use Copilot for free, Microsoft would prefer you subscribe and gain extra functionality. At $20 a month, it isn’t cheap, but it does match the pricing for ChatGPT’s paid plan. If you’ve subscribed and want to cancel or refund your Copilot Pro subscription, you can follow these steps to do so.

How to Cancel Your Copilot Pro Subscription

If you have an active Copilot Pro subscription, you can cancel it in your Microsoft Account settings.

1. Open your web browser and visit the Microsoft Account services settings page.
2. When prompted, sign in with your account details.
3. Locate your Copilot Pro subscription in your list of active subscriptions and click Manage.
   
4. Click Cancel subscription to end the subscription.
   
5. You’ll be asked to confirm your choice — click Cancel Subscription to do this.
   
6. Follow any additional on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Once the Copilot Pro subscription is canceled, you’ll lose access on your next payment date. If you want it to end immediately and receive a refund, however, you’ll need to consider whether this is possible below.

Can You Get a Refund on a Copilot Pro Subscription?

Looking to get a refund on your Copilot Pro subscription? You might be in luck, but it’ll depend on a few things. First, you’ll need to cancel the subscription first using the steps above.

Once your subscription is canceled, the refund you get (if you get it) will depend on where you live. In certain locations such as Canada, Denmark, France, and Turkey, you can get a prorated refund at any point, meaning you’ll be refunded for the rest of the subscription you didn’t use.

For instance, if you cancel three days in, you’ll get a refund based on the rest of the days left in your monthly subscription refunded to you, minus the days you “used.” If you’re not in a country that belongs to this list, you can still get a prorated refund, but only if the purchase was within the last 14 days.

If the purchase wasn’t within the past 14 days and it wasn’t due to fraud, you’re out of luck.  A full list of prorated refund locations, as well as the terms and conditions that apply to them, is available on the Microsoft website.

Gaining a Copilot One-Month Trial

If you’ve never had a Copilot Pro subscription before, you’re in luck — you should be offered one as soon as you decide to subscribe. These are usually for a month, allowing you to try the functionality without making a purchase. To gain a Copilot Pro trial for a month, follow these steps.

1. Click the Copilot icon on your taskbar.
2. In the menu, click Get Copilot Pro.
   
3. Windows will open a new Edge window. If you’re not already signed in, you’ll be asked to do so at this point.
4. If you haven’t had a subscription before, you should be offered a trial. Agree or disagree with the optional terms and conditions before clicking Start trial, pay later button.
   
5. Follow any additional on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Once you’ve activated your trial, Copilot Pro functionality will activate in your Copilot panel. If it doesn’t, give your PC a quick restart to fix the problem. One thing to remember is that the subscription will roll on past your trial end date. If you don’t want to continue with your subscription after the trial period, make sure that you cancel the subscription before your trial period ends to avoid being charged.

Using Copilot on Windows

Microsoft is betting big on AI, with further and deeper integrations into Windows planned. If you want to ride that wave, a Copilot Pro subscription might make sense. At $20 a month, however, it’s only the really committed users who will benefit, as most of the functionality is available for free.
