Comment on Backup, Share, and Securely Store Files Like a Pro with OneDrive by jamies https://www.groovypost.com/howto/backup-share-securely-store-files-onedrive/#comment-1300293 Sun, 21 Jul 2024 13:59:48 +0000 https://www.groovypost.com/?p=265268#comment-1300293 Long time home user of 365, so have the 1TB, but the OneDrive access facility is still ful of poor design considerations – the latest fun being to create a new folder under my /user/ id, and load it with links to all the folders and files I can aces on OneDrive,
as organiser for the Family that was several hundred thousand entries som of the family fully sync their windows devices.
New I7 system – black screen for about half an hour –
looked as if it was powered off, so inviting press of the power button !
Then severa; hours on a 100Mb/s broadband ( 15Mb/s upload) to link all the files on OneDrive to the entries in that folder,
So- if I delete the folder created in my /User/ environment – well I login to OneDrive to do my file management work.
So – if I had deleted that folder structure, Microsoft would have deleted those files from the OneDrive store, and then –
Synced the family members systems to that OneDrive set of not there anymore file status.

And – I was told that there is an option to unlink the files .
but MS design is that you only get to see that option when all the setup, including the linking process is completed –
so no warning about the massive additions to the MFT, no mention of the unlink facility before the linking is all done, and then it appears as an option that was not there when I initially went looking at the control available for the OneDrive App.
And

The older 2 core DDR3 RAM system – 3 days of it getting to the login screen, letting me login, and then ignoring all mouse and keyboard input – just keeping the comms lights glowing, along with the hard drive and the CPU usage glowing .

IT did eventually finish the setup of the OneDrive App and I could then (having found out about the unlink option on the new I7 system) unlink the /users/me/OneDrive/ folder entries –
another day of not getting any thing done on that system as the MFT gets a major thrashing,
then another wait as the MFT is compressed to get rid of all those added, and now deleted entries.

Luckily the lack of response stopped me adding OneDrive app to the login I use for the OneDrive maintenance for the family’s usage and systems security.

so, while OneDrive for educational students level users, and for business users with IT support to manage their systems – maybe – providing they have the Gigabit/sec comms links, 6 core 11th gen cpu’s with fast SSD’s and RAM.
for the majority of home users –
start by considering do you want to pay for microsoft 365 and have MS update it as they wish, while also changing your OS ?

Or will you pay the £19.99 annual subscription for 100GB of OneDrive storage so that windows 11 hav backup your system to the OneDrive and use all the space for that as opposed to your data.

Comment on How to Pin Files, Folders or Drives to Windows 11 Taskbar by KS https://www.groovypost.com/howto/pin-files-folders-or-drives-to-windows-11-taskbar/#comment-1300108 Fri, 19 Jul 2024 13:22:38 +0000 https://www.groovypost.com/?p=239331#comment-1300108 Thank you for the really clear instructions. Yes, this worked fine to pin an excel file into the taskbar. But what I really want to do is pin it in the EXCEL app icon that I put in the taskbar already, not clutter up the taskbar. I removed the recent files in the START because it was adding all sorts of files into the EXCEL app icon in taskbar that I didn’t want.
Not happy with Win 11 so far. It was so easy before to pin my files.

Comment on How to Change Your User Folder Name in Windows 11 by sam https://www.groovypost.com/howto/change-your-user-folder-name-in-windows-11/#comment-1300095 Fri, 19 Jul 2024 09:36:40 +0000 https://www.groovypost.com/?p=240096#comment-1300095 update: after i changed the name from the folder as well as the win registry, i went back to my original account, and nothing is running. No wallpaper, no files, no file explorer. I think once you change the name, windows cant find the path anymore and files cant be used that way. I changed it back to the original name and everyone is fine. I dont think you can change the name and keep your files. The best method that I can think of, is just copying your files somewhere else and clean installing windows, and then copy the files back. The name gets stuck with all your files so i dont think this name change method is worth it. You could however create a new user, give admin privileges and copy all your files to the new user as well but clean install just seems less of an hassle. Either way ill just try to ignore the problem for now, because clean install is just still a lot of work for such a trivial problem. Ill do it once i have enough of a reason.

hi peter, I want to ask you if you are signing out of your original account to get to the local account, and not restarting to switch accounts. I was restarting and I had the same issue you did, instead go to start menu, and click on your profile picture, and you’ll see the option to sign out. If you restart and switch, windows will show that the original account is still signed in and hence not let you change the name saying its still open in some other program. Hope that fixes it for you, because it did for me.

Comment on How to Make Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome Always Open in Guest Mode by Cyber Nautilus https://www.groovypost.com/howto/make-microsoft-edge-or-google-chrome-always-open-in-guest-mode/#comment-1300041 Fri, 19 Jul 2024 06:06:12 +0000 https://www.groovypost.com/?p=207863#comment-1300041 Google’s Chrome can be set to launch into a ‘Profile Chooser’ at each launch, making it very convenient to decide which profile one wishes to use. Since MS’ Edge browser is based on Google’s Chrome, I assumed that that could be done on Edge, too. But I’m unable to find such a setting.

I’m trying this on Linux Mint 22.04 LTE with Cinnamon desktop. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Tried it with the path and filename in quotes – says it can’t find it, tried it with no quotes (read somewhere) and then says “access denied”

Comment on Network Sharing Not Working on Windows 11: 6 Fixes by Jed Rothwell https://www.groovypost.com/howto/network-sharing-not-working-on-windows-11-6-fixes/#comment-1298962 Sun, 14 Jul 2024 21:36:01 +0000 https://www.groovypost.com/?p=236533#comment-1298962 NONE of these steps worked for me. Or, they worked sometimes and then stopped. Today they stopped completely. And do you know how I fixed it? Guess! Got to Sharing, Advanced sharing settings, and turn off everything. No discovery, no file or printers sharing, public and all networks off, off, off. Just go to the folder in Explorer, Properties, Sharing, and turn on sharing.

Bonus, when it is not working, you often cannot go to Properties, Sharing. Explorer stops working. When you turn off everything in Advanced sharing settings, Explorer works instantly.

NOTE, the folders will not appear in your copy of Explorer, but you can see them with the \\Mycomputer command in Explorer. Other computers may see them in explorer. I recommend you use Explorer Map as drive feature.

I can open the apps the files (.mkv, .mp4, .mp3 .epub and probably others as well) are meant to be opened in and then open the files from there and it works fine, however if I try to open them through the file manager, it doesn’t work, leaving me with a “class not registered” error message. I’ll keep looking, although this was still very useful. I discovered I had multiple copies of the same Microsoft Visual packages, I had some corrupt system files that I fixed, etc etc.

Before Steve Jobs came back. When the internet was a fairly new concept. He turned the company around, but then did something I’ll never forgive him for. First he made it into a music company with the ipod then the iPod touch, Then he turned into a phone company. Dropped the “Computer” from the company’s name. Then the Mac was gone. I learned computing on a Mac where I worked. Now they make WAY overpriced phones as well as overpriced computers that they are try to make run more like a phone (iOS) Been on Windows where i work now for 15 years. Once I made it from xp to Win 10 I prefer Windows
