How to Change Wi-Fi on a Ring Doorbell
If you change your Wi-Fi network, you’ll need to update your Ring doorbell settings, too. Here’s how to change Wi-Fi on a Ring doorbell.
Smart tech is everywhere. You can buy everything from smart plugs and smart light bulbs to smart fridges and smart dishwashers. Some of this smart tech feels a bit unnecessary; a smart fridge doesn’t really offer any significant benefits over a dumb one. Some smart devices, however, are so much better than their dumb equivalents that you’ll never want to go back.
Smart video doorbells are one such example. A dumb doorbell that rings in your home when it’s pressed serves a purpose but has many flaws. There’s no way to tell who is at the door. There’s no way to speak to the person at the door without physically going to the door, which isn’t ideal if the doorbell rings while you’re taking a bath. If someone rings the bell when you’re not home, you’re completely oblivious to the fact that anyone has called at your home.
Video doorbells solve all of the problems, allowing you to monitor your door from anywhere on earth, talk to callers remotely even if you’re not home, and instantly see who is calling so you can decide whether it’s worth getting out of the bath or not.
Your video doorbell needs Wi-Fi to work, however. If you change your Wi-Fi network, you will need to update the settings. Here’s how to change Wi-Fi on a Ring doorbell.
How to Change Wi-Fi on a Ring Doorbell
To change the Wi-Fi network on your Ring doorbell, you’ll need to be near your device. Your Ring doorbell will need to connect directly to your mobile device, and you may need to manually put your Ring doorbell in set-up mode by pressing the button on the device. Your Ring doorbell must have sufficient charge if it’s battery-operated. If you’re not currently near your Ring doorbell, you’ll need to wait until you can access it before changing your Wi-Fi.
- Open the Ring app on your phone.
- Tap the Three Lines icon in the top-left of the screen.
- Select Devices.
- Select the Ring device for which you want to change the Wi-Fi.
- Tap the Device Health tile.
- Under Network select Change Network.
- Tap Change Wi-Fi Network to confirm you want to start the process.
- You’ll need to be near your Ring doorbell to make the changes. Tap I Am Near The Device to confirm this.
- Your Ring doorbell should enter set-up mode, indicated by the light on the device spinning white. Once it’s spinning, tap Light is Spinning White.
- If the light isn’t spinning, tap Not Spinning White.
- If the light isn’t spinning, you’ll need to manually force your Ring doorbell into set-up mode by pressing the button on the device, and following the instructions given.
- For a Ring Video Doorbell, remove the doorbell from the bracket and look for a button on the back.
- If you have a Ring 2, remove the faceplate and look for a black button on the top right.
- For a Ring Video Doorbell 3, 3 Plus, 4, and Ring Battery Video Doorbell Plus, remove the faceplate and look for the button just below the camera.
- On the Ring Video Doorbell Pro, Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2, Ring Video Doorbell Wired, and Ring Video Doorbell Elite remove the faceplate and look for a button on the right side.
- Once the light is spinning, tap Light is Spinning White.
- When prompted, connect your phone to the temporary Wi-Fi network created by your Ring doorbell; the network will have the word “Ring” in the name.
- Once your phone connects to your Ring doorbell, select the new Wi-Fi network that you want to connect to.
- Enter the password for your chosen Wi-Fi network.
- Your Ring doorbell will try to connect to your new Wi-Fi network.
- If the connection is successful, you’ll see a message informing you that your Ring doorbell is now ready to use again.
- If you’re unable to connect, try the process again.
Why Won’t my Ring Doorbell Connect to my Wi-Fi Network?
If your Ring doorbell isn’t able to connect to your Wi-Fi network, there are a few possible reasons. The first is that your Wi-Fi signal is too weak at the location of your Ring doorbell. Try moving the router closer to where your Ring doorbell is located to see if this helps. If it does, and you don’t want to keep your router where it is, you may need to consider options such as mesh networks or Wi-Fi boosters to improve the Wi-Fi signal in the location of your Ring doorbell.
Another reason that your Ring doorbell may not connect is that your Wi-Fi is using an incompatible frequency. Many Wi-Fi networks operate on one of two common frequencies; 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks are a little slower but can reach much further, and 5GHz networks can offer faster connection speeds, but only work well over shorter distances. Many routers will offer both frequencies, giving you the best of both worlds.
Some Ring doorbells are not compatible with 5GHz networks and can only connect to 2.4GHz networks. If your Wi-Fi network is 5GHz-only, older Ring devices may not be able to connect at all. If your network offers both 2.4GHz and 5GHz support, you may need to force your network into 2.4GHz mode following the manufacturer’s instructions to connect to your Ring doorbell.
The following Ring doorbells do support 5GHz networks. If your Ring doorbell isn’t on this list, you’ll need to use a 2.4GHz network to use your Ring device.

An Alternative Method to Change the Wi-Fi on a Ring Doorbell
Changing the Wi-Fi network on your Ring doorbell is fairly simple to do, but if you don’t want to have to worry about removing faceplates and finding reset buttons, there is another option that you can try that may work.
When you set up your new Wi-Fi network in your home, give the new network the same network name, also known as an SSID (the Service Set Identifier), as the one that the Ring doorbell was originally connected to. You should also ensure that the password to access this Wi-Fi network is the same as the original. You’ll need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular router to change the SSID and password.
Once you’ve changed your new Wi-Fi network to the old name and password, you may find that your Ring doorbell connects to the new network automatically, believing it to be the old one still. If this doesn’t work, you’ll have to follow the process for connecting to a new Wi-Fi network as outlined earlier in the article.
Changing WiFi on Your Ring Doorbell
By following the instructions above, you should be able to connect your Ring doorbell to a new Wi-Fi network in just a minute or two. If you’re having issues, it may be because your doorbell isn’t compatible with a 5GHz network; in this case, you’ll need to force your doorbell to connect to the 2.4GHz band or upgrade to a Ring doorbell that has 5GHz support. If your doorbell does support both bands, it’s worth trying it on each to see which offers better performance; the 5GHz band should be faster, but if the signal is too weak, you’re better off sticking to the 2.4GHz band.
