The Free Version of LastPass is Losing Features Starting March 16th

The free version of LastPass is about to become less useful. It is removing multi-device syncing and losing email support.

The popular password manager LastPass is about to become less useful. The company announced it will be removing features from its free tier. That includes removing the ability to view and manage passwords on either their computer or phone but not both. User’s of the free tier will also lose email support. The changes start on March 16th.

LastPass Free Tier Restrictions

LastPass announced today on its blog post that free users will be losing the ability to view and manage passwords between two devices. If you’re a free user you will need to pick between one of two devices: mobile or computer.

Mobile users will be limited to iOS and Android phones, iPads, Android tablets, and smartwatches. While Computer users will be able to access passwords from Windows, macOS, and Linux desktops and laptops, the LastPass browser extension, and Windows tablets.

According to the LastPass blog post:

We’re making changes to how Free users access LastPass across device types. LastPass offers access across two device types – computers (including all browsers running on desktops and laptops) or mobile devices (including mobile phones, smart watches, and tablets). Starting March 16th, 2021, LastPass Free will only include access on unlimited devices of one type.

As a free tier user, starting March 16th, notice the changes and you will have three chances to switch between devices. The statement goes on:

As a Free user, your first login on or after March 16th will set your active device type. You’ll have three opportunities to switch your active device type to explore what’s right for you. Please note, that all of your devices sync automatically, so you’ll never lose access to anything stored in your vault or be locked out of your account, regardless of whether you use computer or mobile devices to access LastPass.

In addition to the changes outlined above, free users will no longer have email support. “LastPass Free users will always have access to our Support Center which has a robust library of self-help resources available 24/7 plus access to our LastPass Community, which is actively monitored by LastPass specialists.”

Multi-device and email support will only be available for those who pay for a premium subscription starting March 16th. A Premium subscription includes the ability to sync passwords between mobile and desktop, 1 GB encrypted file storage, dark web monitoring, unlimited device type access, dedicated personal support, multi-factor authentication, and more. A premium plan is $3 per month billed annually.

But for a limited time, the company is offering LastPass Premium for $2.25 per month (billed annually). So, it will cost you $27 for a full year of premium support. After that, you will be billed $36 annually.
