What is DbxSvc.exe and Why is it Running?

If you’re going through Task Manager on a Windows machine, you might see DbxSvc.exe running in the background. Is it a valid file? Is it a virus? Great questions. Let’s review what it is and if you should be concerned or not.

What is DbxSvc.exe?
It is a Windows service that installs with the program; the file itself resides under C:\Windows\System32. It looks like a Windows system file, which is not the case if you uninstall Dropbox. Then this service and this file is gone.
The name comes from an abbreviation, Dropbox Service – DbxSvc – and is the service executable DbxSvc.exe with the description “Dropbox Service.” Dropbox uses this service to sync files between their cloud storage and the local computer.
If you encounter any issues with this service, you can at no risk, stop the DbxSvc service by either going to the service management console and prevent the service. Or, start an elevated cmd.exe and run this command to stop it:
It will only temporarily stop the service, and it will come back unless you change startup to disable it. But it is a good first test to stop it and see if the issue is gone.
Is it a safe file?
The file is safe if all the three below are true:
- Look if the file is located under the C:\windows\System32 folder.
- Verify the file’s digital signature is valid and by Dropbox, Inc.
- Verify it is a recent version of the file to ensure there are no security issues, and Dropbox released a more recent and more secure version.
If you are not using Dropbox, you can uninstall it without any risk. By doing so, you also remove the service and the process from your system.
Don’t worry DbxSvc.exe is a legit file
As we’ve discussed, DbxSvc.exe is normally a valid Dropbox service file. To be safe, you have to verify the file is recent, has the correct digital signature, and is running out of the correct folder.
